Sunda vathal Kulambu

Sunda vatha kulambu/ Sundaikkai vathal kulambu a staple food for south indians, whoever love south indian veg foods, without fail they’ll request this in all hotels, mess.. typical norht tamilnadu dish, very common in chennai, when i was in search for the curry got a good preparation in tasty appetite.. immediately put in action, thats really a flavourful curry… best accomplishment with hot steamed rice..

Preparation time- 20 mins
Cooking Time- 20-30 mins
Serves- 3-4
Ingredients:
Dried Sndaikaai/Dried Turkey berry- 1/2 cup
Oil- 3 tsp
Pearl onion- 1/2 cup
Tomato- 1
Red Chillie powder- 1 tsp
Coriander powder- 1/2 tsp
Pepper powder- 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
Jaggery- a bit
Tamra ind water- 1 cup
Salt- to taste
Curry leaves
For Masala:
Toor dhal- 2 tsp
Channa dhal- 2 tsp
Sesame- 1 tsp
Red chillie- 2-3
Corriander seeds- 1 tsp
Oil- 1 tsp
To Temper:
Mustard- 1/2 tsp
Cumin- 1/2 tsp
Fenugreek seeds-1/4 tsp
Urad dhal- 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves- 1 spring
Method:
* Heat the kadai with oil and dry roast the Ingriedients for masala till it turns golden brown {Toor dhal, Channa dhal, Sesame, REd chillie, Corrinader seeds}
* Make them cool and grind them in a mixer
* Heat a kadai with oil and fry the Dried sundaikai/ Dried Turkey Berries, till they roast and keep them aside.
* In the same oil add the tempering items {Mustard, Cumin, Fenugreek, Urad dhal,}
* Saute the sliced pearl onions and curry leaves till the onion turns the color
* Add in the tomatoes and cook till they mushy and release the oil, add in the masala{Turemric powder, chillie powder, corrinader powder, pepper powder}Cook in medium flame for 3-4 mins to roast the masala..[Ooops i miss to click the pics for this step, sorry friends.. will update soon]
* Add the tamarind water make them boil.
* Now add the Prepared Masla to this, when it boils together the gravy becomes thick enough..
* Add in the Jaggery, mix them well
* Add in the fried sundaikaai to the curry… put in low and cook this for few mins..
Notes:
* When Frying the sundaikaai, Carefully fry them without burning it..
* Spice powder ratio is important
* Adjust the consistency by adding water in the last step
